The 3 Benefits of TPO Roofing

If you’re looking for a new roofing membrane that offers superior energy efficiency, then TPO roofs may be one of the best options for you. In today’s post, your roof replacement specialist, Steinmeyer Roofing, Inc. shares three benefits that make TPO roofs a great addition to your home.

What Is TPO?

TPO, or thermoplastic olefin, roofing was first offered in the roofing market during the early 1990s as a convenient alternative to both PVC and rubber roofing products. It’s touted to have the benefits of both of its competitors and none of its disadvantages and extra costs.

TPO is a single-ply roofing system that’s made of a thermoplastic polyolefin membrane that’s composed of three layers, namely: the TPO polymer base, the polyester-reinforced fabric center, and TPO compounded top ply. Some roofing companies and manufacturers use fillers such as talc, fiberglass and carbon fiber. Some popular rubbers that are used during the manufacturing process include ethylene-propylene rubber and EPDM.

Benefits of TPO Roofing

1. Economical. One of the primary reasons that TPO roofing is a popular option is because of its reasonable cost. It’s considerably cheaper than PVC roofing and offers the same benefits, such as hot-air weldable seams and superior energy efficiency. To put this into perspective, a 1500-square foot flat roof costs around $7455 for a TPO roof, and $8055 for a PVC roof. The savings that you’ll get with TPO roofs are undeniable.

2. Easy to Install. Roofers love working with TPO roofs since they’re manufactured with wider sheets and are easier to carry around. This means that it’s easier for them to install as well, further reducing your installation costs.

3. Durable. Compared to other thermoplastic membranes, TPO roofs are resistant to mold spores, dirt buildup and punctures. It’s also very flexible as it adjusts to your home or building’s movement. In fact, a reinforced TPO membrane can handle thermal expansion very well compared to other single ply roofing systems.
